Junction City: Incredible Places To Visit

Fans will have the opportunity to meet the 2021 team at the annual meet and greet at Rath Field on Wednesday, June 2, and at the opening game on Friday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m.

The 2021 Mid-Plains League All-Star Game will be held on Saturday, July 17, beginning at 7 p.m. However, the All-Star Festival makes it a one-day event, including a family-friendly derby, post fireworks and other special events.

The squad will include players from local community colleges, Division 2 institutions and other universities. With the arrival of players from different places, host families need players. Those interested in becoming a host family for players can visit JCBrigade.com. The crack of bats, the shouts of the crowd, the smell of fresh poppies on a clear summer evening. . . They tell a baseball story familiar to many. Baseball brought it all to the Connect City Brigade at Roth Field, but the story goes deeper. Baseball is the foundation of history, community spirit, resilience and a quality of life rich in passion, success and camaraderie.

Instead, the field — constructed of limestone from Junks City — is an architectural landmark and one of the most historic baseball fields in the Midwest. Opening its doors in 1937, it was built as an administration project to promote jobs that was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The WPA was a federal program that began during the Great Depression and directed millions of job seekers into public works. Arthur Roth was the namesake of the stadium, the city engineer who made the most effort to bring the project to life. As the Gary County Historical Society shared, the first game at Rott Field was played on July 18, 1937, when a full stadium of 1,400 people cheered on the local Jays.

"There are a number of athletes who have played at Rat Field and played professional baseball," Junction City general manager Cecil Asca said. “Dennis Leonard of the Royals, Albert Puhols of the Cardinals and Junkes City natives Joey Devine of the Braves and Nick Heath of the Royals all played at Rhett. "Many Negro League teams, including the KC Monarchs, played at Rott Field with players like Buck O'Neill and Jackie Robinson."

"Otherwise, the stadium has also hosted a number of semi-subsidiary teams in the past," Esco said. “In the 1960s it was the home of the Junction City Hawks. Rhett Field is home to Junkes City High School and the American League Lions Post 45 baseball team. "It's one of the best places to watch baseball in Kansas."

Instead, the area has been renovated in recent years, preserving its history and splendor and bringing it up to modern standards. Major renovations in 2002 included work on the field, benches, changing rooms, press boxes, lighting, fencing around the field, as well as parking and picnic areas. In 2005, the Lucas family brought the Junction City Generals to Rhett Field to play summer league baseball. They, along with the city of Junkes, further developed the stadium by adding additional seating, a beer garden, and wooden decks of varying heights for patrons. For five consecutive years, the Generals have provided the community with great baseball in a family atmosphere.

After detouring summer baseball at Rott Field in 2011 and 2012, the Junkes City Community Baseball Club was founded by six local residents with a desire to bring baseball back to the city they love. The Connect City team kicked off the collegiate summer league baseball tournament on June 1, 2013, opening day. From then until 2019, more than 35,400 fans passed through the gates.

"I'm one of the original founders of the Junkes City Community Baseball Club and I own and manage the Junction City Brigade varsity baseball team," Eska said. "We believe the return of baseball has been a boon to Junction City and has helped to create a more positive image of Junction City."

The College Summer Baseball League is a league of amateurs in the United States and Canada who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one more year of eligibility to play the sport. The league is known as the "Collegiate Wood Bat Batting Experience" because, like professional baseball, they only use wooden bats. This is in contrast to the regular college baseball season, which offers aluminum or other composite baseball bats. Collegiate summer leagues, such as those played by the JC Brigade, allow college baseball players to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and giving professional scouts the opportunity to observe players in such an environment.

The Connect City Community Baseball Club was created as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to bring college baseball back to Junks City, provide opportunities for students to continue to develop their athletic skills, provide support and resources to youth and work to improve youth, Aska said. Provide resources to community organizations and agencies that provide affordable family recreation services in a safe and active environment.

A graduate of Aska-Empire State and a former judicial service officer, he retired as district court administrator in 2015 and has served as JC Brigade's general manager since 2014. He had a lifelong passion for the game, playing youth baseball, coaching youth baseball and playing softball for over 15 years.

Due to the flu, JC Brigade did not compete in 2020. They are now very excited to return for the 2021 season, which includes June and July. "This season has been successful so far," Esca said. "The team has a winning record and steady attendance."

Aska shared some of the team's successes. In 2014, the Downtown Community Baseball Club/JC Brigade helped found the Mid-Plains League. The Cowboys have won four titles in six seasons (2014, 2016, 2018, 2018 and 2019) and are the first and only team to win back-to-back titles.

In 2021, the JC Brigade finished first in the regular season in addition to winning the Mid-Plains League All-Star Game. The JC Brigade is the No. 1 seed in the Mid-Plains League and is looking for its fifth title in eight seasons in the league.
