The last federal holiday was signed into law on June 17, 2021 by President Joe Biden to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States after the end of the Civil War.

Everything You Need To Know About Flag Day

The day has been observed annually across the country since 1865, when a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas and informed enslaved African Americans that the Confederacy had lost the war and were free under the Emancipation Proclamation, signed in 1863 in many parts of the country, the proclamation it was not implemented until the army implemented it.

Texas was the first state to codify the date into law in 1980 and is the only state to have the day as a paid day off for state employees in 2020. Since then, at least eight states: New York, Maine, Louisiana, Virginia, Massachusetts, New Jersey , Washington and Illinois - next, according to AP.

The next federal holiday is Independence Day on Monday, July 4. The holiday commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the same day in 1776, which marked the colonies' unified intention to secede from the British Empire. But it should be. Flags are a key symbol of nationalism. What is so important about Flag Day is that it recognizes the day - June 14th - when the Stars and Stripes was adopted as the official flag of the United States of America.

There are a lot of great things to learn about Old Glory and how it's run (see link above) and when you do, Flag Day might suddenly become a lot more important than it was. Here's everything you need to know about Flag Day.

Flag Day was first celebrated in 1877 to mark the centennial of the original resolution that adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the nascent United States. In 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the flag by resolution establishing the colors and general configuration of the flag.

It was not until 1885 that Flag Day became an annual national event. "Father of the Flag Day", BJ Cigrand, organized a group of boys to mark the first annual Flag Day on his 108th birthday. The idea of a national flag day grew slowly. Celebrations in Chicago, New York, Pennsylvania and elsewhere have sprung up across the country.

For about 30 years, Flag Day was limited to state and local municipalities, but the popularity of celebrating the American flag's birthday has grown with the rise of nationalism in the United States. Calls for National Flag Day can be traced back to 1861, and Pennsylvanian William T. Kerr even chaired the National American Flag Day Association for 50 years, beginning in 1889.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Flag Day as a national holiday in a presidential proclamation. This was by order of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, which adopted June 14 as Flag Day in 1907. However, it was not until 1949 that an act of Congress, signed by President Harry S. Truman, firmly established Flag Day as a national holiday.

Unlike Memorial Day or Labor Day, Flag Day is not a federal holiday. This means that Flag Day that falls on a weekday does not close non-essential government operations, close the stock market, or anything like that. It's a day to celebrate and learn about the history of the American flag.

Many veterans organizations use Flag Day as a day to properly dispose of old or worn American flags, while other organizations hold essay contests to spread awareness of the flag and its history. But celebrating Flag Day yourself can be as simple as raising a flag at home in accordance with the Flag Code that governs its proper display.

Armed Forces Day in the UK on 26 June marks a special day for the country's sovereignty and interests. Notable and extraordinary parades and marches are organized every year in the landmarks of the country. Although Armed Forces Day is an official event, it is not a public holiday as businesses and offices remain open. One of the aims of the day is to recognize the merits and sacrifices of the country's forces. Soldiers and cadets train day in and day out to protect the citizens of their country from all kinds of dangers. Their efforts are praised by everyone, including politicians and celebrities. Another goal of the day is to raise funds for those injured in the service.

Armed Forces Day in the UK originally started as Veterans Day in 2006. Veterans Day was seen as an extension of Veterans Awareness Week. This first Veterans Day was a series of events launched at the Imperial War Museum, established in London in 1917 to recognize the efforts of the British Empire during the First World War. That day was marked by James Gordon Brown, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer, Prime Minister and leader of the Labor Party from 2007 to 2010. Veterans Day celebrated living veterans and their families. Later, in 2009, the name of Veterans Day was changed to Armed Forces Day as a way of recognizing and rewarding all branches of the Armed Forces.

Some of the celebrations include military parades and theatrical performances. In 2010, the main events took place in Cardiff. The military parade, led by the Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) and the Duchess of Cornwall (Princess Camilla), covered the area from Cardiff Castle to Cardiff Bay. Cardiff's waterfront also featured many other spectacles, involving land, sea and air as stages. Every year the main events are hosted in a different city than the armed forces
